Strange Experiences - Things that Go "BUMP" in the Night
By Gary Simpson
Have you ever felt when you are alone that you are NOT alone? Ever had that
spooky feeling that you were being watched by someone, or something? It makes
your skin crawl and the hair at the back of your neck stand up.
I'll be the first to admit that there is much that we do not know and cannot
explain.
A favorite technique used by the owners and operators of old hotels and
culturally important locations is for somebody to claim that a certain room is
haunted. That is an old ploy to get people to visit these places. People go
there in the hope that they will experience, or even see, a ghost.
Whilst I cannot personally claim that I have actually "seen" a ghost, I have
experienced some rather strange phenomena, mostly when I was much younger.
On many occasions I have experienced "deja-vu" where I have known EXACTLY what
was going to happen, who would be involved and even the exact words that various
people would use. It used to un-nerve me until I learned to cope with it.
On other occasions I have felt and even detected the presence of other things.
Let's just call them "entities." Usually this took the form of a particular odor
or a change in the general feel of my surroundings. The most dramatic example of
this was during a time of grieving over the loss of a person who I greatly
admired and who had been a trusted friend for many years. This was particularly
sad as the person in question died suddenly and without any real reason at a
fairly young age.
Perhaps we experience these things during periods of heightened emotion or
awareness. During other times, when we are so tied up with the demands of life,
maybe we just ignore them or pass them off without even realizing them.
Although I have never experienced anything even remotely like the events
depicted in the movie "The Exorcist" I know people who swear that they have.
These are people who I trust so I do not doubt their sincerity.
During the recounting of one of these events my friend, who was a priest, was so
visibly shaken that he simply could not go on and relate all the details. It was
disturbing to say the least.
Whether there are spirits or not I cannot say with any sureness but there are
certainly things that defy normal logic.
So, next time you experience something "strange" or something goes "bump" in the
night, realize that it may be just that you are in a state of increased
awareness or emotional distress. You are not going insane. It happens to a lot
of people. In fact it is possibly happening a lot more than we think but we are
just not normally attuned to it.
And next time you are contemplating taking a short cut through a cemetery late
at night, if you would even do such a thing, then maybe you should just go the
long way around instead.
